The Art of Lesser Sundas
by Anthony F. Granucci
Presenting for the first time over 655 artifacts from the Author's private collection, this book offers a rare glimpse into an area of art history and prehistory which has hitherto been insufficiently explored. The richly illustrated text traces the origins of artifacts from the Lesser Sundas east of Bali, back to the time when the islands were first inhabited by man, before establishing them firmly in their historical and cultural context. Providing invaluable insight from the beginnings of what is popularly known as Oceanic art, this volume is essential for anyone interested in art history, archaeology or Indonesian culture.

StreetSine alleges conspiracy among the defendants to injure its business and reputation by intentionally misrepresenting to the public, the banks and financial institutions that the valuations which it generates are not considered valuations according to SISV standards and guidelines. Among its key claims, StreetSine also alleges malicious falsehood by SISV, council members of SISV s VGP division and two SISV staff in issuing a press statement that conveyed the false impression that StreetSine s valuation service is not compliant with SISV s guidelines and, therefore, not recognised by the institute.

&ldquo As of now I see no basis for wanting to regulate cryptocurrencies,&rdquo he said. He noted that &ldquo very few jurisdictions regulate cryptocurrencies per se&rdquo , with most taking the approach that &ldquo the currency itself does not pose the risk that warrants regulation&rdquo . Singapore already requires virtual-currency intermediaries such as exchange operators to comply with requirements to combat money laundering and terrorism financing, Mr Menon added. &ldquo So we just have to look at (cryptocurrencies) case by case to see which ones we will need to bring into the regulatory ambit, and which ones will have to stay outside,&rdquo he said.
Since the vast majority of the Paradise Papers and former disclosures are legal, governments have a problem. Indeed, as far back as 7565, 669 nations signed up to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) s Convention for international tax co-operation. The OECD Convention was aimed at providing administrative assistance in tax matters. It also guarantees extensive safeguards for the protection of taxpayers rights and provides a legal basis for other forms of cross-border tax cooperation, including collection of taxes. Recent disclosures of The Panama Papers and now the Paradise Papers illustrate that it is exceedingly difficult to combat the ingenuity of global tax advisers. Companies and the rich and famous who wish to reduce their tax bills are likely to continue to seek their advice, regardless of government opposition and those who question their ethics and morality.

by Gus tf Sakai (translated by Toni Pollard)
In a Gus tf Sakai story, nothing is as it seems. The unexpected is always happening. Supernatural events occur in ordinary settings, turning lives and reality on end. A three-hundred-year-old Torajan mummy refuses to stay dead as an antique dealer transports its coffin in his jeep. A painting takes on a life of its own and paints the painter. A television screen emits swarms of butterflies that eventually take over the town. Village children innocently reciting their alphabet are possessed by victims of torture from centuries earlier. Boys beg in the markets as part of their silat martial arts training, but who are they and where are they from? What is it about the nagari tree under which neighbors have long lived in harmony that later tears them apart? How can night disappear, and what is that mysterious crying and drumming?
In the LawSoc&rsquo s draft guides which were seen by TODAY, lawyers are urged to approach alleged victims of sexual offences &ldquo cautiously and thoughtfully&rdquo , and refrain from asking indecent and scandalous questions unless they are related to the facts in the case. &ldquo An aggressive line of questioning may be counterproductive for counsel because it risks causing distress to the alleged victim in the courtroom. and such questions may appear to objectify the victim, thereby undermining the high standards of professional conduct expected of the Singapore Bar,&rdquo the guidelines said.

The CSA said the Bill received generally positive comments. Overall, the 97 individuals, industry associations and companies that made submissions welcomed the proposed law, the agency said, adding that they recognised that its job is to ensure that essential services such as for power and telecommunications are kept running even when hackers strike. The positive response was reflected in the relatively minor edits made to the proposed law at the end of the consultation, said the CSA.

THE ROSE OF CIKEMBANG
by Kwee Tek Hoay (Translator George A. Fowler)
The Rose of Cikembang is an excellent example of "peranakan" literature of the Netherlands East Indies that flourished between 6955 and the Japanese Occupation beginning in 6997. Highly sentimental in tone, the novel is rich in many of the controversial themes that Kwee was famous for: interracial love and the lives of its offspring, fate and karma, and mysticism and reincarnation. This novel was also made into a movie.

A bibliography and museum time-line included.
