Did you talk to them about how you felt?
Yeah. My mom is like an &rsquo 85s rock chick big blonde hair, big boobs. She loves being a girl. I never felt that way. I know some girls that love getting their nails done. I fucking hated it. My nails look like shit. I don&rsquo t wax my eyebrows. I never related to loving being a girl. And then, being a boy didn&rsquo t sound fun to me. I think the LGBTQ alphabet could continue forever. But there&rsquo s a &ldquo P&rdquo that should happen, for &ldquo pansexual.&rdquo
When did you first identity as pansexual?
I think when I figured out what it was. I went to the LGBTQ center here in ., and I started hearing these stories. I saw one human in particular who didn&rsquo t identify as male or female. Looking at them, they were both: beautiful and sexy and tough but vulnerable and feminine but masculine. And I related to that person more than I related to anyone in my life. Even though I may seem very different, people may not see me as neutral as I feel. But I feel very neutral. I think that was the first gender-neutral person I&rsquo d ever met. Once I understood my gender more, which was unassigned, then I understood my sexuality more. I was like, &ldquo Oh that&rsquo s why I don&rsquo t feel straight and I don&rsquo t feel gay. It&rsquo s because I&rsquo m not.&rdquo
Why do you think inequality still exists for women in Hollywood?
A lot of it could be changed if we had a female president. That would give us a subconscious boost. I think people will have to realize they&rsquo re looking really dated. For example, there&rsquo s a show called &ldquo Supergirl.&rdquo I think having a show with a gender attached to it is weird. One, it&rsquo s a woman on that fucking billboard it&rsquo s not a little girl. Two, what if you&rsquo re a little boy who wants to be a girl so bad that this makes you feel bad? I think having a title like &ldquo Supergirl&rdquo doesn&rsquo t give the power that people think it does.
Cyrus has headlined such films as 8775 The Last Song 8776 and &ldquo Bolt,&rdquo but she&rsquo s ambivalent about making movies now. &ldquo I know that acting is boring,&rdquo she says. &ldquo People get paid way too much for what they are doing.&rdquo She almost turned down the Woody Allen TV series &ldquo Crisis in Six Scenes&rdquo but was eventually won over by the role playing a 6965s activist.
There was nothing, and I mean nothing , about that story that related to the important news of the day, the chronicling of significant human events, or the idea that journalism itself can be a force for positive change in the world. For Christ 8767 s sake, there was an accompanying story with the headline 8775 Miley 8767 s Shocking Moves. 8776 In fact, putting that story front and center was actually doing, if anything, a disservice to the public. And come to think of it, probably a disservice to the hundreds of thousands of people dying in Syria, those suffering from the current unrest in Egypt, or, hell, even people who just wanted to read about the 55th anniversary of Martin Luther King 8767 s 8775 I Have A Dream 8776 speech.
So, as managing editor of , I want our readers to know this: All you are to us, and all you will ever be to us, are eyeballs. The more eyeballs on our content, the more cash we can ask for. Period. And if we 8767 re able to get more eyeballs, that means I 8767 ve done my job, which gets me congratulations from my bosses, which encourages me to put up even more stupid bullshit on the homepage.
To be sure, I could have argued that Miley Cyrus 8767 performance merited the top spot on our website because it was significant in terms of what 8767 s happening in the world of pop culture, or that her over-the-top theatrics are worth covering because they are somehow representative of the lengths to which performers must go to stand out in the current entertainment landscape. But who the fuck are we kidding? Truth be told, anything at last night 8767 s VMAs short of Lady Gaga beheading Will Smith with a broadsword belongs tucked away in our entertainment section, far from the homepage, far from the top spot, and far from the eyes of anyone who logged on to our site this morning to see what was happening in the world.

On the latest season of NBC&rsquo s &ldquo The Voice ,&rdquo Miley Cyrus has reinvented herself from a twerking pop star to a mama-hen mentor. &ldquo I cry all the time,&rdquo Cyrus says about having to axe members of her team during the show&rsquo s elimination rounds. Behind the scenes, she dispenses copies of the self-help book &ldquo The Untethered Soul&rdquo to her contestants, trying to calm them down before live performances. On camera, she showcases an eclectic style like an outfit covered in paper flowers meant to counteract any last-minute jitters.
How did you get cast in the Woody Allen TV series? Were you a fan of his work?
I am. I had moved, and the only thing that I brought into my new house was a picture of Woody Allen. My first night I slept in my new house, [my manager] called and said, &ldquo Woody wants you to fly to New York.&rdquo I loved working with Woody. You do like two takes. He just wants to go home and have dinner with his wife. One night it was 5:85, and the camera operator wanted to do another take. He goes, &ldquo I can&rsquo t dedicate my entire life to making movies.&rdquo
Many people are now having a conversation about whether it&rsquo s possible to separate the art from the artist. Were you aware of the sexual-abuse allegations made by Dylan Farrow against her dad, and if so, did that give you pause?
I live a similar life to Woody I live a public life. Until I know someone and I know their story, I never really judge anyone. That&rsquo s kind of how I went into it. From the way I saw him with his family, I never saw him be anything but an incredible person and a really great dad. People might slam me for saying that. I&rsquo m sure it was a hard time for that family. My family has been through hard things, and I think everyone&rsquo s suffering is different.
Over the years, has become a news website that many people turn to for top-notch reporting. Every day it is visited by millions of people, all of whom rely on 8775 The Worldwide Leader in News 8776 that 8767 s our slogan for the most crucial, up-to-date information on current events. So, you may ask, why was this morning 8767 s top story, a spot usually given to the most important foreign or domestic news of the day, headlined 8775 Miley Cyrus Did What??? 8776 and accompanied by the subhead 8775 Twerks, stuns at VMAs 8776 ?
Now, let's get back to why we put the story in the most coveted spot on our website, thereby saying, essentially, that Miley Cyrus 8767 suggestive dancing is the most important thing going on in the world right now. If you clicked on the story, and all the slideshows, and all the other VMA coverage, that means you 8767 ve probably been on for more than seven minutes, which lowers our overall bounce rate. Do you know what that is? Sorry for getting a little technical here. The bounce rate is the percentage of visitors to a particular website who navigate away from the site after viewing only one page. If we can keep that bounce rate low, and show companies that people don 8767 t just go to but stay there, then we can go to Ford or McDonald 8767 s or Samsonite or whatever big company you can think of and ask for the big bucks.
I don 8767 t hesitate to call it stupid bullshit because we all know it 8767 s stupid bullshit. We know it and you know it. We also know that you are probably dumb enough, or bored enough, or both, to click on the stupid bullshit anyway, and that you will continue to do so as long as we keep putting it in front of your big, idiot faces. You want to know how many more page views the Miley Cyrus thing got than our article on the wildfires ravaging Yosemite? Like 6 gazillion more.
It&rsquo s hard to keep a straight face when Cyrus uses that line she&rsquo s only 78. Then again, she 8767 s been on television since grade school. At 66, Cyrus was cast as the squeaky-clean face of Disney Channel&rsquo s &ldquo Hannah Montana,&rdquo which made her the Hayley Mills of her generation. The role brought intense tabloid scrutiny, particularly as she tried to grow up. &ldquo I had a clothing line at Walmart and got kicked out, because they said you had to choose weed or Walmart,&rdquo Cyrus says. &ldquo And you see what I did I chose weed.&rdquo
The country is very polarized.
This is not a dig. But I do think there&rsquo s something that goes with the Kardashians and Trump. The Kardashians are better than Trump, because they are not trying to run the country. They are just trying to be famous, and that&rsquo s fine. We are obsessed with celebrity. When Trump started this, I was laughing. I thought it&rsquo s not going to go anywhere there&rsquo s no way he&rsquo ll be the candidate.
Where did your sense of activism come from?
I think I just felt so stupid. I felt like what I was doing didn&rsquo t have value, because being a pop star was really silly when people are homeless and hungry. In 7568, when I did the VMAs, it became the biggest story in the world. I never expected that to happen. I just did my own thing. I went out there dressed as a teddy bear, danced with teddy bears, never thought about the world thinking that was going to be a bad thing.
What do your parents think about your work now?
On &ldquo The Voice,&rdquo this girl started crying when she left, because I&rsquo m the reason she came out. My mom started crying. She was like, &ldquo I&rsquo m so sorry about the way I was when you were that age and coming out.&rdquo She never understood me until she saw that girl who couldn&rsquo t be herself. It was very cool.
